It crops up a lot in a particular wargame (HOI) and as I can't follow the nomenclature I tend to avoid the naval side completely.

Just off the top of my head....

CV = Fleet carrier
CL = Small carrier capable of sailing fast enough to keep up with the larger fleet carriers
CVE = Escort carriers.... slow and used for convoy protection.

BB = Battleship

CB = Battle Cruiser (only two made for the USN)
CA = Heavy cruiser
CL = Light Cruiser

DD = Destroyer
DE = Destroyer escort

LSD = Landing Ship "Dock"
LST = Landing Ship "Tank"
LCI = Landing Ship "Infantry"

PT = Patrol Torpedo boat


Then you have the cargo ships, troop transports, amphib types, etc, etc,
