In 1940 the Finnish Navy had five submarines, of which four were capable of laying mines, an important activity in the Baltic where they operated. At the end of the war they were all still in service, but were scrapped in accordance with the terms of the peace treaty.
Finnish submarines were the product of German designers and Finnish shipyards. They were direct descendants of the German UB.II and UB.III of WW1.
An interesting submarine was the Saukko a small coastal boat built to German designs, she could be dismantled into two sections for transporting to Lake Ladoga, then on Finland's eastern boundary.
