A couple of things in the story don't add up. Though the fact that the 3 died, and that Cornish survived as a POW is fact. As is the fact of who shot them down.
However, the part about Cornish abandoning the ship before it was attacked makes me ask - how does the writer know this? The only way they would is if either one of the crew radioed the fact to base or Cornish admitted it himself. If the former, then it would be interesting to find out whether Cornish was court-martialled for dereliction of duty or even cowardice in the face of the enemy. If Cornish admitted it after the war, then some corroborating evidence is required.
I'm not convinced by the embellishment to a sad story of a crew being lost.
