Armies love impenetrable terminology. I spend lots of time ploughing through V.A.O.S. lists (Vocabulary of Army Ordnance Spares) and those are simply standardised lists of components. The name goes back to the 1860s.

Have you been able to find out which Corps or Regiment he served with ? That might give a clue for further investigations.
