Of my two grandfathers that served in WWII, one I know his service very well as I was brought up on his war stories which led to my passion for WWII history.
My other grandfather I never knew, apparently he rarely spoke about his experiences during the war, never claimed his campaign medals and there is no scrap of evidence of his service. He didn't keep anything, not his service book or discharge certificate even. All I know was that he was a Despatch Rider in the Royal Artillery.
Anyway not so long ago I was surprised to discover that his service number was written on my father's birth certificate. The number corresponds with the Royal Artillery using the above list.
Was it common practice for servicemen to add their service number to their childrens' birth certificates?
