Hi all,
I stumbled across this site earlier today whilst trying to find out some things on Google regarding Dunkirk.
I'm taking my parents across to France as an Anniversary present to show them around some of the places of note during that dark time.
To date I have:
Cassel-The memorials and defence of the town
Wormhoult- The Barn
Dunkirk-Beaches, Memorial and Cemetery
Bray Dunes- Beaches.
Any further suggestions would be much appreciated. I read a rather good book a few years back called VC's of the Second World War publsihed by Pen and Sword (Only remember them because they are down the road from where I used to work). Anyway I seem to remember there was three VC's awarded during the retreat.
One at Arras- A guy flying into the town in a bren gun carrier shooting at the germans and then jumping out for a few rounds of not so Queensbury rules.
The second in a barn loft by a canal shooting at advancing Germans. I believe he was something of a crack shot before the war due to poaching or game keeping???
The third escapes my failing memory!
I guess this is where I see what a wealth of infomation I now have at my finger tips???
<Sits back and eagerly awaits all of your informative replys>
