Beyond Kokoda

I viewed this presentation last night and found it to be quite emotional on both sides. I think the Australian War Memorial part of this documentary. (I missed a bit of the start and was interrupted during the credits)

The photography, interviews and footage mix (real and staged) was really put together well.

There was real footage of Australian aircraft dropping supplies from a level which looked no more than 20-30 feet off the ground as they did not use parachutes.

I hope that it may be shown in the UK at some stage.

A quote from a Japanese veteran seemed to sum it all up:

Quote:
Java was Heaven, Burma was Hell and New Guinea was Death??

"You were given the choice between war and dishonor.
You chose dishonor and you will have war."

(Winston Churchill made this prophetic pronouncement in a House of Commons speech in 1938, just after Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich agreement with Hitler. Chamberlain returned from Germany with the signed agreement in hand, proclaiming that "peace in our time" had been achieved. Churchill attacked Chamberlain's "politics of appeasement" in this and many other speeches.)
