Although some weapons are obviously more reliable than others, the trouble with a weapon getting a reputation for keeping going no matter what state they are in, is that the soldiers that use thae weapon think they can get away with not cleaning it. All weapons have stoppages and the best way to avoid them is to assume that it's only a reliable weapon when it's clean.
The PPSh's reliability came from it's 'agricultural like' construction and the 'simple' pesant army who would did as they were told and cleaned their weapons regularly.
