I don't think any light bombers other than the Mosquito were really adequate to the task; this wasn't the only time when entire squadrons were wiped out.
In the case of the Ventura, they nearly doubled the power of the engines compared with the Hudson, but forgot to increase the size of the fins, so if one engine was disabled you could not put enough power into the other to maintain height without turning and probably spinning.
