The village in the Ryan film is probably supposed to be Neuville au Plain, which is indeed near the Merderet River close to Utah Beach. The film protrays the sniper action as being sometime around D+5, whereas in fact this village was liberated on D+1. It's a great movie and much of it is based in fact, but most of the action (including this incident with the sniper) is largely made up.
