The Russians actually did all this in 1943 but then they had already captured hundreds of tanks and picked the Pz III for conversion to SU-76i, a de-turreted PzIII with an angled steel box on top and a Russian 76 gun. This made sense considering the large amounts of running tanks captured plus the large logistic stockpiles captured for instance at Stalingrad and whatever else was abandoned in retreats.
