Anzac Day in Australia 25th April

Big week coming up next week that will culminate in the annual Anzac Day marches around Australia & New Zealand.

The history channel has put on a big week to "celebrate" the day of which much is about WW1.

I've got so many versions of that song Spidge, and I like all of 'em, historical innacuracies or not.

Maximum respect to all the old Diggers.
And another chance to post one of my favourite shots from the whole war

I will be on the Somme with a group next week, but am aiming to stop with them at Villers-Bretonneux to pay our respects to the ANZACs on this special day.

I used to go up to Leighterton, Gloucestershire for quite a few years.
Must go there again sometime.

Love that pic of the veteran marching, Adam. No doubt I'll be fighting to stop myself being a blubbering mess on Wednesday.

Caught the 60 Minutes feature on The Battle of Kapyong during the Korean War and have snaffled the 20 page liftout from today's paper. The time of year when you hope more people realise what sacrifices have been made for them.

Watched "Curtin" on the ABC last night. Enjoyed it, actors did rather well but it ended in mid-1942 and then said Curtin died in 1945. I guess they concentrated on Australia's "darkest hour".

Staggering crowds across Australia this morning (Wednesday) at the dawn service at 5.00am. 30,000 attended alone in the cool of the morning in Melbourne at the Shrine of Rememberance.

With a sunny day expected, the Anzac day march later this morning should have huge numbers of onlookers to honour our veterans of all wars.

40,000 at the King's Park dawn service in Perth overlooking the city and the Swan River. TV news has shown great footage of the big crowds for the march and a wheelchair bound vet insisting on walking passed the official party for the salute supported by a police officer and a mate.

The Desert Rats was on at noon so that was a good way to spend a few hours.

Have spent most of the day with something in my eye...

Sitting here watching the "Lighthorsemen" which depicts the Australian charge on Beersheba in WW1. (Has anyone seen it?)

The only great Mounted Infantry charge in history.

Beersheba is often called the Last Great Cavalry Charge. That is incorrect in 2 ways. The Germans and the Cossacks both had cavalry charges in WW2. But more importantly, the Light Horse were Mounted Infantry, not Cavalry. They did not have sabres or lances only 18 inch long bayonets and their rifles slung over their backs. Far from being the Last Great cavalry Charge in history it is (probably) the ONLY Great Mounted Infantry charge in history.

The charge of the 4th and 12th Australian Light Horse Regiments (4th Lt Horse Brigade) at Beersheba.
