Anniversaries/Events for discussion in June!

Many of these may have been discussed before however they are all relevant to WW2. Add as many others as you wish.

If you need to know more about one of these events, list it as a new thread in the relevant area.

June 1, 1939 - British sub "Thetis" sinks in Liverpool Bay with all 99 aboard.
June 1, 1939 - The Douglas DC-4 made its first passenger flight from Chicago to New York
June 1, 1941 - British troops occupied Baghdad, Iraq
June 1, 1941 - Germany banned all Catholic publications.
June 1, 1941 - The German Army completed the capture of Crete as the Allied evacuation ended.
June 1, 1942 - America began sending Lend-Lease materials to the Soviet Union
June 1, 1943 - A civilian flight from Lisbon to london was shot down by the Germans during World War II, killing all those aboard, including actor Leslie Howard (b.1893). Howard was killed over the Bay of Biscay, when the British Overseas plane he was on was shot down by Luftwaffe fighters. His last on-screen role was that of Spitfire designer R. J. Mitchell in the 1942 film “The First of the Few” (released in the US as a trimmed version entitled Spitfire in 1948). Leslie Howard, perhaps best remembered to modern filmgoers as Ashley Wilkes in “Gone With The Wind” (1939), was a World War I veteran who was advised to take up acting as therapy after he was mustered out for shell shock. He found success throughout the 1930s, but with the outbreak of World War II, devoted himself to the war effort--directing films, writing and broadcasting on the radio.

June 1, 1944 - The British Broadcasting Corp. broadcasted a line of poetry by the 19th century French poet Paul Verlaine. It was a coded message intended to warn the French resistance that the D-Day invasion was imminent, “The long sobs of the violins of autumn.”

June 1,1944 - Generals. Montgomery, Patton, Bradley, Dempsey and Crerar met in Portsmouth

June 4, 1941 - Pro-Allied government installed in Iraq
June 4, 1942 - Heydrich dies of wounds.
June 5, 1942 - Germans besiege Sevastopol.
June 5, 1944 - Allies enter Rome
June 5, 1945 - Allies divide up Germany and Berlin and take over the government.
June 6, 1944 - D-Day landings
June 8, 1941 - Allies invade Syria and Lebanon.
June 9, 1944 - Soviet offensive against the Finnish front begins.
June 10, 1940 - Norway surrenders to the Nazis; Italy declares war on Britain and France.
June 10, 1942 - Nazis liquidate Lidice in reprisal for Heydrich's assassination.
June 10, 1943 - 'Pointblank' directive to improve Allied bombing strategy issued.
June 10, 1944 - Nazis liquidate the town of Oradour-sur-Glane in France.
June 11, 1943 - Himmler orders the liquidation of all Jewish ghettos in Poland
June 13, 1944 - First German V-1 rocket attack on Britain
June 14, 1940 - Germans enter Paris
June 14, 1941 - United States freezes German and Italian assets in America
June 16, 1940 - Marshal Pétain becomes French Prime Minister.
June 18, 1940 - Hitler and Mussolini meet in Munich; Soviets begin occupation of the Baltic States
June 21, 1942 - Rommel captures Tobruk.
June 22, 1940 - France signs an armistice with the Nazis.
JUNE 22, 1940 - Fall of France gives U-boats Atlantic bases for the first time.
JUNE - 1940 - German Dolphin code cracked, allowing rapid and regular access to U-boat signal traffic in the Atlantic
June 22, 1941 - Germany attacks Soviet Union as Operation Barbarossabegins.
June 22, 1944 - Operation Bagration begins (the Soviet summer offensive).
June 23, 1940 - Hitler tours Paris
June 25, 1942 - Eisenhower arrives in London
June 26, 1945 - United Nations Charter is signed in San Francisco
June 27, 1944 - U.S. troops liberate Cherbourg
June 28, 1940 - Britain recognizes Gen. Charles de Gaulle as the Free French leader.
June 28, 1941 - Germans capture Minsk
June 30, 1942 - Rommel reaches El Alamein near Cairo, Egypt

Churchill attacked Chamberlain's "politics of appeasement" in this and many other speeches.)
