Marking the 70th Anniversary

I thought we could occasionally post on here events from 70 years ago.

I've mentioned this on another thread today but I'll start the countdown to the 70th anniversary of WW2.

British Historical Documents: "Peace for Our Time," 1938

"Peace for Our Time," September 30, 1938
The following statement was made by British Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, in front of 10 Downing Street, London, after his arrival home from the notorious Munich Conference of 1938

We, the German Fuhrer and Chancellor, and the British Prime Minister, have had a further meeting today and are agreed in recognizing that the question of Anglo-German relations is of the first importance for our two countries and for Europe.
We regard the agreement signed last night and the Anglo-German Naval Agreement as symbolic of the desire of our two peoples never to go to war with one another again.
We are resolved that the method of consultation shall be the method adopted to deal with any other questions that may concern our two countries, and we are determined to continue our efforts to remove possible sources of difference, and thus to contribute to assure the peace of Europe. My good friends, for the second time in our history, a British Prime Minister has returned from Germany bringing peace with honor. I believe it is "peace for our time." Go home and get a nice quiet sleep

Tragic that Chamberlain who an honorable and well-meaning man had no idea what sort of monsters he was dealing with in Hitler and Ribbentrop.

Text of Chamberlain's defence of the terms in the House a couple of days later.
Neville Chamberlain, Peace in Our Time

Quote:
The Prime Minister: Before giving a verdict upon this arrangement, we should do well to avoid describing it as a personal or a national triumph for anyone. The real triumph is that it has shown that representatives of four great Powers can find it possible to agree on a way of carrying out a difficult and delicate operation by discussion instead of by force of arms, and thereby they have averted a catastrophe which would have ended civilisation as we have known it. The relief that our escape from this great peril of war has, I think, everywhere been mingled in this country with a profound feeling of sympathy.

[Hon. Members: Shame.]

The Prime Minister: I have nothing to be ashamed of. Let those who have, hang their heads. We must feel profound sympathy for a small and gallant nation in the hour of their national grief and loss.

Mr. Bellenger: It is an insult to say it.

The Prime Minister: I say in the name of this House and of the people of this country that Czechoslovakia has earned our admiration and respect for her restraint, for her dignity, for her magnificent discipline in face of such a trial as few nations have ever been called upon to meet.

How did Chamberlain's speech go down in the House? Was he cheered or was it derided?
