1941 Today, 15th July is the day that hundreds of thousands of mostly women, teenagers and youngchildren on the Leningrad outskirts, commenced digging the trenches and fortifications that went for nearly 300 miles. I remember well as a young boy seeing this on a newsreel in the local cinema (circa 1960's). It was shown in the World at War series also. A true meaning of the saying..."People Power"

Yes indeed Spidge and well done on remembering. If any place other than Stalingrad could be taken as a symbol of the Russian defiance then Leningrad would be it.

The most shocking thing about the Leningrad epic to me, was the testimony of a woman who survived the siege as a young girl. She remembered seeing her parents starving, and wanting them to die...so she could get their bread ration. I find that so hard to grasp as a concrete or abstract idea...wanting your parents to die for their bread.

And I hope that the world would never have to see this in war again however we have an undeclared genocide and starvation going on in Africa and not so long ago in Asia. How can "man" treat another "man" with so much hate? There are never any winners.........just losers!

Being from Strathclyde yourself, you wouldn't be showing just a little partiality towards to the wee wee lad from Alloway..........would you? PS Pity the movie didn't do the "fantasy" of Tam O'Shanter justice. [attachmentid=870]

I have often felt that the central thread of humanity is our sadism. It starts when the doctor slaps the kid on the rump right after birth, is nurtured by schoolyard bullies, and continues on into adulthood, with people who have power -- any kind of power, no matter how small -- using it savagely stomp their interlocutors. Ultimately it spreads to secret policemen, soldiers, thugs, goons, corporate executives, even ordinary husbands who beat their wives and kids. Consider this: in a school, bullies' victims are considered "troubled." So the bullies are "normal." Why?
