An extract from the Black Watch site.

The Black Watch of Canada is the oldest Highland regiment in any Dominion; they were founded in 1862.

After WW1 the Regiment began its history in the Second World War by boarding and taking an Italian ship in the Gulf of St. Lawrence a day or two after Italy's entry into the war. Three battalions were raised, but only one managed to get overseas. One company took part in the Dieppe Raid of August 1942, losing most of its strength. The Battalion landed in Normandy a month after D-Day, and its Padre was the first to be killed. Its first major attack took place on the [b]25th July, against the village of Maysur-Orne[b]. The Colonel and many others were killed; a young major called Griffin, who had managed to push ahead, sent back a brave message: "Don't sent reinforcements: we have too many men here now." He and all his men were lost; 28 officers were lost that day; and more casualties were suffered in their next attack eleven days later. But before many weeks had passed they had the satisfaction of capturing Dieppe, and revenging themselves for the losses of 1942

"You were given the choice between war and dishonor.
You chose dishonor and you will have war."

(Winston Churchill made this prophetic pronouncement in a House of Commons speech in 1938, just after Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich agreement with Hitler. Chamberlain returned from Germany with the signed agreement in hand, proclaiming that "peace in our time" had been achieved. Churchill attacked Chamberlain's "politics of appeasement" in this and many other speeches.)

Yes, 2nd Canadian Division was assigned to liberate Dieppe in 1944, and they went straight for the cemetery to tend the plots of their lost comrades.

51st Highland Division was sent to St. Valery-sur-Mer, where the previous 51st Highland Division was bagged in 1940.

The worm had turned.

Nice story spidge, I didin't know Canadians liberated Dieppe. It's poetic justice I guess.

For the Highland Division it was no coincidence. Montgomery moved the 51st Div. so it could liberate St Valery. Perhaps he did the same for the Canadians?

I'm not sure if those moves were made by Montgomery or Crerar, the 1st Canadian Army commander. It has the "Monty touch," though...attention to morale.
