Dropping of the bomb on Nagasaki.

The only building remaining is the Catholic Cathedral on the hill.

On this day, August 10 1945 just a day after the bombing of Nagasaki, Japan submits its acquiescence to the Potsdam Conference terms of unconditional surrender as President Harry S. Truman orders a halt to atomic bombing.

On this day, 13 August 1940 German aircraft begin bombing southern England, and the Battle of Britain, which will last until October 31 begins.

Emperor Hirohito broadcast a message to his people asking (? commanding) them to accept his decision to surrender to the Allies.

Bonfires are lit and church bells ring the length of the country as VJ Day begins at 1 minute past midnight.
