I thought it appropriate that the poem be posted:

In Flanders Fields
by Canadian army physician Major John McCrae
1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Hello,
OK maybe all year round would be too much, but why not 2-3 monts sooner.
I buy one everytime i see them, but as i said, it is hard to find them some years, and I also say keep them as they are, when they go tatty after a few days, i like to replace it with a new one, by brings out a pin badge, they are sure too loss out every year, as people will not keep giving.
1 quick question for anyone. If me father-in-law wanted to circle or cross of poppys to place at Plymouth on Sunday, for the loss of his father and crew of the ship, could he get one free of charge?.

I've only seen them on Ebay myself, When I brought my Poppy last week, I asked the seller if he had any of the pin badges, he told me they were only being sold to RBL members via their branch.

Canadian Poppy quarter (25 cents)

Canadian Poppy quarter (25 cents)
This is Canada's first circulating coin with a painted poppy in the middle. They were distributed on October 21 2004 throughout Canada. On the top of the coin reads " Canada 2004" and at the bottom it reads "Remember Souvenir." How many of these coins are available has not been disclosed but by the end of the day most of the coins were limited to one per customer. It is unique as it is the first "painted" coin to be placed in circulation. It is a unique coin and comes at a time when our volunteer soldiers of the second world war are fading away but hopefully never forgotten.

Contact your local RBL Branch but offer them a Donation for it.

From: http://www.diggerhistory.info/pages-tributes/poppy.htm

The first red poppies to come to Australia, in 1921, were made in France. (See left)
In Australia, single poppies are not usually worn on ANZAC Day - the poppy belongs to Remembrance Day, 11 November. However, wreaths of poppies are traditionally placed at memorials and honour boards on ANZAC Day.
The red Flanders’ poppy was first described as a flower of remembrance by Colonel John McCrea, who was Professor of Medicine at McGill University of Canada before World War One.
Colonel McCrea had served as a gunner in the Boer War, but went to France in World War One as a medical Officer with the first Canadian Contingent. He was KIA.
Above. Representation of the Poppy by RSL Qld.
Left: A poppy from the post WW1 era, 1 of the first to be imported from France. The metal plate behind the poppy was to be folded over to slip into a pocket or button-hole.
Royal British Legion poppy.

The Returned Soldiers and Sailors Imperial League of Australia (the forerunner to the RSL) first sold poppies for (not on) Armistice Day 1921. For this drive, the League imported one million silk poppies, made in French orphanages.
  • Each poppy was sold for a shilling: five pence was donated to a charity for French children, six pence went to the league's own welfare work and one penny went to the league's national coffers.
Today, the RSL sells poppies for Remembrance Day to raise funds for welfare work, although they have long since ceased to import them from France. (AWM text).

Donnation

While it's a great idea members of the RBL are entitled to the enamel badge, the rest of us have to remember when handing over our money and recieving a poppy in return this is purely a donnation not a purchase. Not everyone shares the views of the forum members and see the collection tin as 'just another charity'. So what if the poppy goes tatty, falls off or you can't find last years, make another donnation.
I always wear my poppy with pride and look forward to rememberance Sunday, it's such a sobbering occasion, hero worship is wasted on here today gone tomorrow pop stars and medicore people who are famous for being famous.

Well said Brian.

Er....what do you and others think of the White poppy. Personnally, I feel that it combines the poppy of rememberance with the desire for peace. But I have heard a lot of people who dismiss it as anti-Rememberance Day
