Green Howards Anzio March 1944

It seems the regiment was engaged in an area called "The Fortress" on that day. Does anyone please have anything from the War Diaries etc

Thank you

Peter

Could you please provide further information so we ascertain what dates also have you contacted the Regimental museum at Richmond, North Yorkshire or look on the web for the Old Commrades Association.

I've got Raleigh Trevelyn's book The Fortress, the first few pages cover that day.
Also got the 5th Division history, doesn't say too much just holding the line.
I see these two men were killed that day.

001 COULTER J 4386935 1ST BN 13/03/1944 GREEN HOWARDS (YORKSHIRE REGIMENT)
002 HALPIN J 4398392 1ST BN 13/03/1944 GREEN HOWARDS (YORKSHIRE REGIMENT)

edit:
Ah I see this is the chap you mentioned here.

anziotours is an unknown quantity at this point
hello :-) I was googling 'fortress anzio' because on sunday morning I was there searching for it's precise location with a friend of mine. I am from leeds, but live in rome. I lived in the beachhead area 6 years ago. my friend is italian, and interested in the events of early 1944. looking at the photo, it seems we found it. videos and photos will be on this site - Anzio Tours - Real Battlefield Tour of the Anzio Beachhead 2010 - 66 years on - before may 1st. at which time the site will be complete. the fortress is on the right hand (northerly) side of via moletta towards the end (it's a dead end - 3 farms), off via riserva nuova where the caves are. buonriposo ridge is easily visible, 100 metres west of this lane. all the land is privately owned and they use dogs against everyone. they also call out the police whenever they see a car. we're writing to all of them to remind them that irrespective of the fact that they bought some land, where they live is of huge importance. we'll request access for purposes of research in the next month or two. go to google maps, search for via moletta aprilia - you'll see brown terrain directly to the north of the lane in satellite view. in my opinion, it's the fortress. rest in peace all who died there. thanks for the thread :-) pete
