I see your point but you are being too picky!

How about the Ilyushin Il-2 Shturmovik? Simple, effective, could be flown by a peasant, 35000 built. Ok I'm thinking outside the box here - I'm with Jeff: how do you define best? It would be easier and more meaningful to say "best fighter" or "best bomber" or whatever, and even then you would have to ask "best at what point in time?" E.g the Stirling was probably the best bomber of 1941, but you could hardly say it was the best of the war.

I'm with Jeff & Adrian, 'best' is impossible, (unless, perhaps, you're looking at specific roles within time periods) 'best tank', 'best plane', 'best gun' etc. always leads to the old comparing apples with oranges, & fruit spilled all over the floor... Favourite allied plane however; at the moment a childhood fascination with the B17 is coming back to me (anyone know any really good 1/48th or bigger kits of it?).Cheers, Adam.

In those books of aircraft profiles I just remember it really standing out, a purely emotive response to the look of the thing. The name 'Flying Fortress' also did it for me, but thinking about it; I recall counting the number of machine guns on a model I had as a kid and just being so impressed. In fact... it's probably still the sheer number of guns that appeals to me, combined with what I know now about their astonishing resilience to damage.
