![]() ![]() | Hi mate - I only have 1944. Currently I don't have a lot of spare time on visit to Kew, but if I get 5 mins I will see what I can do. However, it may take me a few months.

![]() | mate, thankyou......a few months is fine.....i would like to know what happened the day he was killed....family legend has it that he was a dispatch rider who rode over a mine....but who knows. i know that it wont go into detail, as with ww1 war diaries i know that other ranks were never usually given a mention by name, does this change with ww2 war diaries?....he was the only casualty for the 5th that day so maybe? Donnie

![]() ![]() | They generally mention ordinary soldiers far more. The 1944 diaries I have are typed, and mention quite a few names, especially when they were the only casualty that day. Will see what turns up.

![]() ![]() ![]() | Just checked 78th Div History. 17/11/42 General Anderson ordered the Div to advance on Tunis as soon as it completed forward concentration along the arrow-head of roads Tabarka--Souk-el-Arba--Ghardimaou. 36 Bde on left along northern road and 11 Bde on left, (5 Northants in 11 Bde) on road from Beja that runs through Medjez-el-Bab, Tebourba and Djedeida to Tunis. A small column known as HARTFORCE recruited from 11 Bde Group under Major V Hart of Northamptons was operating on the north road. Not alot of help but some background info. |

![]() ![]() ![]() | Nothing more from Div History but in Ken Ford's book Battleaxe Division it says HARTFORCE made up of, 'A' company, Carrier Pln, & section of AT guns from 5 Northants. With squadron of armd cars from 56 Recce, AA guns & sappers. All units of 11 Bde contribued vehicles to make it fully motorised column. 16 Nov Hartforce left support vehicles at Tebarka and went forward as lorried infantry. Went thru village of Djebel Aboid & took road to Mateur. Came across enemy force stronger than his so took to hills and resorted to guerilla warfare joined up with 36 Bde few days later. |
