I don't really mind being called a Yank when coming from a Briton. Anyone from the US would know by my accent that I am a Southerner. We don't use Reb, unless as a joke or when making fun of a Yankee.

It's kinda like your use of the word "Yank". We in the US don't use "Yank", except when used as a verb. We call Northerners "Yankees," but they don't really use the word much, either. We have other words for them, but since this is a family forum...

I was 12 years old before I learned that damnyankee was actully two seperate words. You Scots and Irish may have the same quandry with Bloodyenglish.

So why are Canadians called Canucks?
Best I can do is....
Quote:
The term Canuck is first recorded about 1835 as an Americanism, originally referring specifically to a French Canadian. This was probably the original meaning, though in Canada and other countries, "Canuck" refers to any Canadian

The earliest recorded use of the term Canuck, sometimes spelled Kanuk, was in 1835. Similar terms such as Cannakers or Canukers were in use in the 1840s. The term was first used in lumber camps in Maine to refer to French Canadian loggers working in the Maine woods. It was used to distinguish them from other Canadians.

GPRegt is on a distinguished road
'Pom' or 'Pommie' - as used by our Cousins from Down Under - derives from POHM - Prisoner of His Majesty.

Posh - Port Out, Starboard Home. Money allowed you the privilege of booking a cabin out of the sun on your cruise.
