![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | 19th Century sailors given a dose of lime juice to ward off the old scurvy wasn't it? I seem to remember that they were deprived of the better quality and abundance of vitamin C in Lemon juice because lemons didn't thrive in the British realm of influence. Whereas limes grew in the west indies.

![]() ![]() ![]() | Peter - as far as I recall in my history lessons it was when the RN were sailing the High seas in the wooden walled battleships - the crews suffered from what was known as "scurvy" - which was caused by the lack of fresh vegetables - and so some boffin back home came up with the cure that all hands were to drink lime juice to prevent this sickness - it worked - much to the hilarity of those who didn't have too many battleships - boffins et al - who then called ALL British sailers 'Limeys' - the name has stuck particularly in the old time colonies..... Cheers |

Like most slang no one knows the real origin of the term but there are several theories. One is that it is derived from a native Indian word for "English", referring to Englishmen living in New England. Another theory is that it is taken from the Dutch last name "Janke" and originally referred to Dutch colonists. I think because Paddy was the Irish shortened version of Patrick. So why are Canadians called Canucks? | |
