Re: Brand New Spitfires

Hmm, very pretty but about as fast as a wardrobe. Isn't there a company in Birtain that is building complete Spits with the Merlin Engines as well? I'll have one of them once I've won the lottery. It'll keep the Mosquito company in the Blister.

Tut, Tut, Tut!

As it states, it is an 80% replica.

Due to customer demand two alternative power packages have been developed using the automotive derived GM Isuzu quad cam V6, These engines are brand new direct from the factory not second hand reconditioned engines as used by some engine package builders. .
Naturally Aspirated Engine
266 hp @ 5500 rpm. 274 lbs/ft torque @ 4500 rpm
485 lbs/ft torque at prop
28 - 30 lts/hr @ 70% throttle
Starting with the basic engine an in house designed and built redrive unit is fitted with ratiosof 1.7:1 or 1.775 :1 depending on the option. A MoTeC engine management system featuring sequential fuel and ignition is then installed along with a custom made loom in Mil Spec wiring and Ray Chem flame proof covering. All fuel and oil lines are replaced with stainless braided lines and Earls fittings and coolant hoses with Silicone high quality hoses. Custom made oil and coolant radiators are also supplied with the kit along with fuel filter, remote mount oil filter and all other hardware neededto fit the engine to your aircraft.
A special feature of this system is the duplication of sensors and the ability to switch between banks of sensors much like switching between MAGS. During normal preflight run up the engine is switched between systems to ensure correct operation but unlike conventional systems there is no change in engine operation apart from a "blip" which denotes the change of systems. The engine can therefore be run on either A or B system with no performance change and can be switched at any engine speed.
Because this engine has one coil per cylinder it has allowed us to incorperate a high level of redundancy into this system and from extensive testing it has been established that the engine will operate on 4 cylinders with one crank trigger operating at 60% of max engine power.
Supercharged Engine
310 hp @ 5200 rpm. 350 lbs/ft torque @ 4200 rpm
595 lbs/ft torque at prop
30 - 32 lts/hr @ 65% throttle
For those who desire even more power a supercharged version of this engine is available. The torque has been increased by some 30% which has made the already lively engine even better and has given it the ability to operate at altitude, but normalised to sea level performance. The obvious advantages of this are increased cruise performance and better fuel economy offered at higher altitude and the ability to fly clear of terrain or weather. The climb performance has also been significantly enhanced. Interestingly, this additional power has come at only a 5 KG weight penalty and 2 litres/hr fuel burn increase!
OTHER ENGINES
JABIRU

PROPELLOR
IVO Prop Magnum 3 blade coposite with electric in flight pitch adjustment.
The Spitfire Mk 26 with the V6 engine will initially be using an IVO Propellor
Two three and four bladed propellors can be used

The engines are made in Australia by General Motors in Melbourne.

The GM engine factory exports engines all over the world from here.

Re: Brand New Spitfires

Can somebody please help me with a hazy memory. I am sure about 5 years ago I heard of a British Company setting up to build new Spitfires, and had the bought the copyright for the Merlin engines as well so they were 100% replicas. Where the hell is this company based? I seem to recall it was at an air museum or some such. Is it at Duxford?
