Road Pricing in the UK

The UK government's proposal to introduce road pricing will mean you have to purchase a tracking devise for your car and paying a monthly bill to use it. The tracking devise will cost about £200 and in a recent study by the BBC, the lowest monthly bill was £28 for a rural florist?? and £194 for a delivery driver. A non working Mum who used the car to take the kids to school paid £86 in one month. What I object to is the need for any change in the way we pay for the roads and our use of them. The so called public transport system seems to be in such a mess that we would have no choice but to pay up if we want to get to work on time. The proposed road pricing will be pure and simple an extra tax on top of Income tax, NI Contributions, VAT, Council Tax, TV Tax for the BBC, fuel Tax etc etc. On top of the increase in tax, you will be tracked. Somebody will know where you are at all times. They will also know how fast you have been giong, so even if you accidentally creep over the limit you can expect an additional fine with your monthly bill.

If you care about our freedoms and stopping the constant bashing of the car driver, please visit the petition on No. 10's new website:

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Scrap the planned vehicle tracking and road pricing policy.

The closing date for the petition is 20 Feb 2007. I bet you didn't know there was such a thing.

What do our outside UK friends make of road pricing?

I've signed it. Hope they actually take notice. Now I need to go and repair the hole in the ceiling from where my blood pressure just went through it.

This may be comparing apples and oranges, but here in the U.S. we pay 18.4 cents a gallon federal tax on gasoline, and 24.4 cents for diesel oil. In addition, we pay state taxes on both. My state of Massachusetts gets 41.9 cents a gallon for gas.

This is supposed to fund highway contruction and maintenance by charging the users.

The U.K. plan described above sounds complicated, but perhaps I'm misunderstanding the post. The tracking devices would certainly be considered an invasion of privacy here in the States. Anyone proposing such a measure would surely be told to be out of Dodge by sundown.

They can already track you via your mobile phone as it is, and ANY electronic device can be "sabotaged" ; anyone ever lumbered with a radio transceiver in a works vehicle knows exactly what I mean.

You have to buy the Tracking box and pay a fee for each mile on the road.

The price I paid for petrol yesterday was by my calculations comes to about $7.35 per British gallon, I think your gallons are a bit smaller. How do you like that then? I also pay £151 for what is called Road Fund Tax every year for my 1600cc VW Camper.

There are plenty of driver's without MOT, Insurance or Road Tax now.
How many people won't pay for this £200 box?
I imagine quite a few.
If we refused to get one en-mass, what could they do?

Remember the idea about a £1 per black bin bag to be collected?
I would have got around that by dumping all my bags around my neighbours house.
This "tracker" sounds as looney as that.

Holy mackerel. And here I complain about gas costing $2.30 a gallon.

Now it occurs to me that I pay federal and state highway taxes no matter the destination of the gasoline, be it the tank in my truck or a can for use in the lawn tractor or chain saw. Unfair! I protest!

There is already a scheme of "pay as you go" insurance based on this technology. The problem is that it an "add on" techology, not production line fitted.

As such with "add ons",it has already been recorded as being responsible for flat batteries and other defects such as engine management problems.

Fit this gear for any other reason and the insurance company would likely declare the insurance, invalid.

Road pricing is envisaged at the earliest for 2015 or beyond when some other government will have the responsibility. There is going to be an extensive lead time to install the system and no political party will accept an unfavourable commitment from the past.It is likely to be a "hot potato"

There is no doubt that the proposals are also being manufacturer led.It is going to create a new market and profits for those who win the contracts.

Big Brother!

A month ago we were paying $6.60 an imperial gallon.

Included in this is government tax for road works. Excised like tobacco and alcohol.

Chamberlain returned from Germany with the signed agreement in hand, proclaiming that "peace in our time" had been achieved. Churchill attacked Chamberlain's "politics of appeasement" in this and many other speeches.)
