![]() | Battle of Longchamps Jan 3, 1945(bastogne) I hope I posted this in the right section but I need some help. I have done extensive research on the net and in books, but have come up with nothing. I am researching the action that took place at Longchamps, Belgium (bastogne) on Jan 3, 1945. Between elements of D/502nd/101st Airborne vs elements of the 9th SS Panzer division (Hohenstaufen). I have heard some call it the Mad Minute, fight did not last long around some 20 minutes but was very fericous. The US eventually pushed the Germans back because of Artillery support that must have been called in from Bastogne (Corp Artillery). My question is what artillery would have been in that sector for artillery support for this battle? I have tried to find a map of artillery posistions aroudnd Bastogne but have found no map. I know the Corp artillery had 155mm, and 105mm batteries (found this in Order of Battle) but how many batteries were available for the D/502nd/101st Airborne during the battle? If anyone has any idea where I could find this out at, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks. |

![]() | Have you read Donald R Burgett's books, particularly "Seven Roads to Hell"? Burgett was in 506th PIR of the 101st. In the above book he says his company were dug in next to a battery of the 969th Field Artillery Battalion and they would go and chat with the gunners when it was safe to do so. But I've also just found this that also mentions the 755th Field Artillery Bttn and 420th Armoured F.A. Bttn. Chapter 19-THE ARDENNES: BATTLE OF THE BULGE Not the answer you are after but hoped it might help. Sorry if this is stuff you have already seen! cheers, Rich. |
