While Germany would still have been defeated, the long term outcome would have been very different. I do not think the Red Army would have kept going to the Atlantic coast, but they would have occupied the whole of Germany and Austria and possibly Greece.

You may appreciate that many of these 94 views came from people re-checking the thread - and perhaps not even members at all - or otherwise people who have no real knowledge of the subject and feel (arguably incorrectly) that they ought not register an opinion. Equally, people might find cause to think the three options are not specific or detailed enough to provide a satisfactory or complete answer through registering a vote.

It is not just because people cannot be bothered... and yes, I don't think the signature does your cause any justice.

The Germans were fighting time, and a failed invasion at D-Day, I think, would have given them the time and morale they needed to keep on fighting.

'Omaha' is the best example. There, a German regular and experienced unit, which was at the time on full-alert, partially equipped, with better terrain conditions and more built defences than the other four beaches and which had not been adequately bombarded by ships and aircraft. At the end of the day the Americans broke through, even if it was at a huge cost.

I disagree in some respects. IIRC the 352. was not fully alert, IIRC just one regiment was manning the beach defences against two reinforced division. And I´m convinced the 352. was under strength. Furthermore the average age of the enlisted men in the 352. was 30, for the officers it was close to 35. Compare that US division.

The Russians were already on the move and the allies also had a foot hold in Italy and they had reached Rome the day before. Hitler would have probably sent more forces again to Normandy out of paranoia.

The Russians would have found it quite different, had they to face the German units in Normandy, Far, far, different. And taking the huge enemy forces gathered round the Dover crossing, waiting for an invasion that never came.

The Russian had by June 1944, aquired a great deal of battle experience against most of the best units in the German Army. Also, they outnumbered the germans in both men and material.
