Unknown WW2 movie

I was once watching TV and I came across this old WW2 movie that I really liked but didn't know the title of it. From what I remember it took someplace in the Pacific on an island where the Japanese occupied it. There were a few Americans on the island. There's a sympathetic Japanese soldier that falls in love with an American woman and is kind to her. He is beaten for something. Then, he helps this American woman and her true love escape the island on a boat while Japanese soldiers are after them. The Japanese soldier and one of his friends fight off the soldiers and sacrifice their lives for the Americans. I'm not sure which film it was but it looked like it was made during WW2 (it was in black and white) since it portrayed most of the Japanese badly. Any ideas on what film it could be?
