Yes indeed I am Owen. I am fascinated with the events leading up to and just after June 22nd 1941 and the one thing that struck me most was the worry the Leadership had as to whether the Russian soliders would fight and the relief felt when reports came in that they were fighting and dying as opposed to surrendering.

Another titbit that really interested me was the story told by a journalist about watching a flight of T-B 3's getting wiped out by a flight of me109's. Even though they had no fighter support the bomber crews still tried to get through to help the ground forces. They died in their droves. Truly brave men.

Ger,that would be Konstantin Simonov describing that episode and he put it in his Novel The Living and the Dead. Zhivye i Mertvye.
Wonder if that is out in English?

Owen, you never cease to amaze me with your ability to hold info!!! Yes it was. I just thought that even though they knew it was suicide, they knew they had to go. Terrible.

One fact that really surprised me is that the Russians had George Formby on in their cinemas.
The film being shown at one, the First Picture House, (Pervy Kinoteartr) was called in Russian, George's Dinky Jazz Band.
Actually called Let George Do it.

Actually I'm now reading the part where during the Panic as the Germans broke through, Beria lost no time in eliminating a number of Generals AND their wifes by sending them to Kuybyshev along with a Hit Squad fresh from the Katyn Massacre to do it. Grim stuff.

Has anyone tracked down the footage of the November Red Square Parade?
(I haven't looked on You Tube yet.)
It was filmed without sound as the camera crew alwys set their equipment up for a 10am start, no-one told them the Parade was to start at 8am, they got pictures but no sound.
