Its on my list Owen. By the way what did you think of Guderians description of his Corps part in the battle from Panzer Leader?

Hey Owen, when I've been googling internet to look who is that Andrew Nagorski I've found that he was reporter of "Newsweek" in Moscow in 70's and helped so-called 'russian germans' to get to west Germany in after-war period, is he author of ur book?
Here is interesting article from one of dissidents that helped 'russian germans' - Îëåã ÏÎÏÎÂ.Êàê ÿ ïîìîãàë íåìöàì. Êàðòà ¹ 24-25, can be read thru translate.google.com, but be advised that translation isn't good Very interesting article for me.

Been into town and got this one.

http://www.whsmith.co.uk/WHS/Go.asp?...220&Menu=Books

If Simon Sebag Montefiore has his name on the cover then that sounds good enough for me.
Some excellent photos inside, haven't time to read any of it yet.
Looks like the author covers everyone from Stalin down to school children.

Wink

Just a note that according to russian and earlier soviet official history turning point was tank battle on Kurskaya Duga at Prokhorovka. It is because in the meaning of turning point russian and soviet historians is understanding that after this event nazi turned back to its country.

I'm finding this fact hard to take in, even though I've heard it before, it's sinking in this time. From page 7.
Quote:
The Battle of Moscow swirled over a territory the size of France, and lasted for six months, from September 1941 to April 1942. The Soviet Union lost more people in this one battle--926,000soldiers killed , to say nothing of the wounded--than the British lost in the whole of the First World War. Their casulaties in this one battle were greater than the combined casualties of the British and the Americans in the whole of the Second World War. This was the horrendous price they paid for inflicting on the Wehrmacht the first real defeat it had ever suffered.

Really enjoying the Rodric Braithwaite book, some excellent Veteran stories from Ballet Dancers to Nurses, Soldiers, Airmen, Poets the whole lot.
Whereas C.Merridale in "Ivan's War" seemed to sugest a "We're Victims" type of feel regards the Russians this book is different. The Russians, in this case, Muscovites had a job to do and got on with it. Whatever they thought of Stalin, they had a Homeland to defend this describes very well how they did it.
Tragic stories, funny stories, grim stories are all in there.
I keep reading bits I can add to this, that & the other thread on here but I'd never get the book read if I did.
I recommend this book very highly, I knw GH is impressd with it too.
