What are your favourite "fictional" movies of WW2?

There have been threads on many "favourite or worse" movies however it would be interesting to see what works of fiction we enjoy about the WW2 era.

It would be more interesting to know although fiction, could they have been based on something that really did happen?

I will start off with:

Von Ryans Express. - Frank Sinatra & Trevor Howard

Where Eagles Dare. - Richard Burton & Clint Eastwood.

What's yours?

"You were given the choice between war and dishonor.
You chose dishonor and you will have war."

(Winston Churchill made this prophetic pronouncement in a House of Commons speech in 1938, just after Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich agreement with Hitler. Chamberlain returned from Germany with the signed agreement in hand, proclaiming that "peace in our time" had been achieved. Churchill attacked Chamberlain's "politics of appeasement" in this and many other speeches.)

I always liked "The Eagle has landed" or "Cross of Iron", both of which are books that were made into good movies.

'Das Boot' has to be up there. One film that shows it how it is. A great film.

I really liked "The Eagle has Landed"

Great book, great cast, great film. Shows the better side of the German soldier.

"Under 10 Flags" with Van Heflin showed the good side of a German "Captain".

Interesting to watch the British wartime film 'Went The Day Well', which is a clear inspiration for 'Eagle Has Landed' and has much the same plot, minus Churchill and the American Rangers! Incidentally, something that has always puzzled me about the village in the film. Are there really places in Norfolk which have ROMAN CATHOLIC parish churches in the middle of the village?

for sheer realism, I'd say Saving Private Ryan, although technically it's based on a true story

for fictional films, Kelly's Heroes will always get a viewing if it's on TV

I've already mentioned my two favs, Mister Roberts and The Caine Mutiny, in another thread. If you are looking for real fictional war movie favs where there is some shooting, explosions and what not, then I guess SPR and Battleground.

You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there, I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long, delerious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace Where never lark or even eagle flew-
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.
