![]() ![]() | Days of Glory Anyone seen this yet? The trailer looks really good but when I went to hire it out last night I noticed it is subtitled. That loses alot of appeal for me. If any of you guys recommend it, then I'll give it a try. Cheers, marcus Days Of Glory - DVD - zavvi UK Last edited by Owen; 25-02-2008 at 10:51 AM. Reason: corrected link |

![]() ![]() ![]() | Highly recommended film! Even my 6 year old thinks it's fantastic even though he can't read the subtitles fast enough. He's seen it 3 times now! I, personally, thought it was superb, even though it left me feeling angry with the french governments. Dave.

![]() | It's not too bad a movie. There are some over-exaggerations and I can remember a small controversy shortly after the film was released, in which the director admitted to skewering some details and events to better fit the film. That too, I can understand. The final battle was obviously inspired by SPR. However, there were fewer colonial in the ranks of the French army in late 1944 into 1945 than in Italy or North Africa, mostly due to the massive influx of ex- FFI fighters being integrated into the newly almagated French army (1st French Army). As for uniforms and such, it was pretty accurate and they did a good job. Not often we see the Goumiers, they looked sharp! Examining the French colonial contributions during the war has been the new trend in France over the past 5-6 years, though it seems overseas they're learning about it for the first time. All in all, I feel the French have done the most compared to other Allied countries in examining and exposing the contributions of theircolonial/minorities. Americans have a few films devoted to the American Black troops, but not that many and they do not appear to enjoy being reminded of it. A war film should be a war film, not an examination of the military's segregational past, so they say. As for the UK, I am unaware if their is anything from the perspectives of the commonwealth/minority troops. Perhaps someone can enlighten me on this. It is true that when the French colonies were given independence, those soldiers that were from those newly created countries lost their pensions from the French government for their efforts during the war. It was good however to know that then-President Chirac was so moved by the topic that he reinstated pensions + interest for all surviving colonial troops. Late, yes, but better late than never. Yet another film released only recently depicts the perspective of the Senegalese fighters in 1940. An interesting read on the subject of colonial unit within the French 1st Army (and of the earlier CEF) is "A History of the French First Army" by Mareshal de Lattre, 1949 (translated and published in English in 1952). Compared to what? What about it did you dislike so much? I'd be interested in reading a more in-depth critique as to how you managed to rate this as "boring" and "worst waste...". Did you actually watch it? | |
