Hi all,

I just bought When Trumpets Fade on DVD. I thought it was very good, although a little short and somethimes the music was a bit inapropriate. other than that i thought it was very good at showing the horror at the end of the war.

What do you think about it?

Also i am looking for WW2/1 movies made in 1980s-present. So far i have found Saving Private Ryan, Band of Bros, The Trench, Lost Battalion, The Bunker (more horror), When Trumpets Fade, Stalingrad, Enemy at the Gates, Thin Red line, Wind Talkers, Harts War, Pearl harbor, Memphis Belle.
Am I missing any others?

Thanks,
Robert

When Trumpets Fade - I really liked this film. Typical quality as you would expect from HBO.

I'd agree too, a little short but worth every penny

As for WW1 and WW2 movies 1980 to present here goes:

The Lighthorsemen 1987
The Trench 1999

WW2
The Big Red One 1980
Come and See 1985
Das Boot 1981
A Midnight Clear 1992
Mother Night 1996
Saving Private Ryan 1998
The Tuskegee Airmen 1995
Underground 1995
When Trumpets Fade 1998
The Thin Red Line 1998
Au Revoir Les Enfants 1987
The Last Metro 1980
Life is Beautiful 1998
Schindlers List 1993
The Wannsee Conference 1984
Bye Bye Blues 1989
Hope & Glory 1987
The Land Girls 1998
Empire of The Sun 1987
Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence 1983
Paradise Road 1997
One Against The Wind 1991
The White Rose 1983
Enemy At The Gates 2001
Enigma 2001
Charlotte Gray 2001
Windtalkers 2003
Dark Blue World 2002
And The Violins Stopped Playing 1988
Pearl Harbor 2001
Harts War 2001
The Pianist 2003

I may have missed one or two but this is pretty complete.

"Aces High" for WW1 and "Cross of Iron" for WW2 are two excellent films that have been omitted from this list that leap to my mind. Both are post 1980 (I think!!!)

I don't care if they're pre-1980 but if you haven't watched "The longest day", "Sink the Bismarck!", "Tora! Tora! Tora!", "Patton", "Battle of Britain", "All quiet in the western front", "The Bridge at Remagen" then you haven't seen anything.

Very, very few modern WWII films are as accurate and very good, dramatically speaking.

A good recent one, the most terrifying film about the Holocaust: "Conspiracy" with Kenneth Branagh, Stanley Tucci and Colin Firth.

There's "Band of Brothers" too.

Another film about the Holocaust, though not a conventional one at all is "Bent". Very good. You even get to see Sir Mick Jagger dressed as a Drag Queen.

And speaking about "When Trumpets Fade", it was good but not very good. The music was indeed inapropriate some times and the photography was quite bad. And the German 'tanks' we see in the film were everything but tanks! Carton boxes with a stick, ill-disguised as a gun...
