I have a copy of Brassey's Guide to War Films from 2000. It's pretty comprehensive covering over 2,000 films. Each film has the director, its country of origin, year of release, length and list of main actors, a small resume of the plot and a review of one to five stars (As a fan of war films and one who will torture himself watching tripe right to the end I have seen a lot of the films listed and I'd agree with many of the reviews)

The Appendices lists films by Director and another by war / period.

I'll try my best to find any obscure films that the title / director / start etc is bothering you about.

To give an example I found 'Ningen no Joken' by Masaki Kobayashi in it. A trilogy from 1961 about a Japanese soldier in Manchuria from 1930s-1945.
I remembered seeing the final part in the 1980s when it was shown on BBC2. This followed the Japanese fighting and being captured by the Red Army in 1945. If I can find an obscure film that has only probably been shown once on the BBC twenty years ago then I figure I can find pretty much any film that has been on TV in the last thirty or so years.

Cheers

Adam
