Once again the "Sunday Times" reviewed a book of military interest. Slightly "off topic" as it is about post-war national service.

The book is "The Call Up: A History of National Service" by Tom Hickman. I have scanned the review, which includes a special offer on the book. Due to the size of the page the scan had to be in two parts, top and bottom.

Does anyone know of any more books that look at national service? I have a couple of others: "All Bull: The National Servicemen" by B S Johnson and "Brasso, Blanco and Bull" by Tony Thorne.

During the late 1940s and the 1950s the idea of national service permeated British society, right down to seaside postcards!

Hi Tony,

There are a few others, of that I am certain, but I can't recall their titles. I did see one print-on-demand type advertised in Medal News a few weeks/months ago.

Hopefully they are a darn sight better than Bad Lads' Army, with such vicious tearaways as 'pranksters', 'binge drinkers' and 'scrappers'. Ooh!

Cheers

Richard
