![]() | No I'm sorry. I've had a look but I can't find it. You'll just have to keep checking the sites, sooner or later it will go on. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Was watching this today on You Tube. Forgot all about this dramatic opening scene. Is it true that the Ober Kassel bridge was blown up in the Americans' faces? That's the OberKassel near Bonn, not the one in Dusseldorf. YouTube - The Bridge at Remagen opening Last edited by Owen; 07-04-2008 at 10:57 PM. |

![]() | I'm not 100% sure, but I think the 'Oberkassel Bridge' scene is fictional. There is an ATB article covering the Rhine Bridges but I don't have time to dig my copy out just now.... FWIW, 'The Bridge At Remagen' is a favorite movie of mine ; or maybe it's just because I saw it when it came out. I've seen it argued that the shoulderboards are wrong, that the Shermans wouldn't have engaged the 88s across the river, etc etc. But as usual, one has to bear in mind that it's not a documentary, it's a Hollywood movie made to entertain and to make money. For its time, the locations were excellent, the music score is very good, the acting surprisingly effective ( at the time, it was very hard to accept The Man From UNCLE as a 'Nazi'.... ), and there are some very spectacular scenes. It was also one of the earlier movies to portray the Germans as formidable opponents rather than 'stupid dummkopfs'. And yes, the opening scene is very effective ( for some reason, I love the way it segues into the shot of the speeding Jeep ). Rather as with 'Where Eagles Dare', I watch the opening and settle into my seat, thinking 'Ah - this is going to be good' ) |

![]() | Cracking film, and if you know the course of the battle, pretty well accurate,to a point. Names and units are changed but the basics are there.Yes,from memory the bridge did blow up in the face of the GIs but also suffered other poundings mostly from the germans after the allied bridgehead was already across, everything from jet bombers to brandenburg frogmen . The most obvious "fact" about the film is that it was shot while the revolotion was unfolding in Prague(those german HQ scenes Im sure are filmed in whats now the Royal castle, those big wrought iron gates are in famous footage of hitler arriving in Prague. Also the film had to be rushed to a conclusion as the cast, crew and tanks etc fled in the face of the invading Soviet and Warsaw pact forces sent by Moscow. And the theme tune gets my vote as best ever war film music ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | According to the Ken Hechler book, the Americans tried to grap the other Oberkassel bridge disguised as Germans. The film clip clearly shows the map of the OberKassel near Bonn. It was the Dusseldorf Oberkassel bridge that was blown up in their faces. http://www.history.army.mil/documents/237ACY.htm Quote:
