I need help finding a book!

I have been trying to find a book that I read in school years ago, but I cannot remember much about it, especially the title. I do know that I have seen a movie that has a lot of the things I read in the book, but I can't remember the name of the movie either. The book is about a male that escapes from one of the concentration camps. He is traveling with a few men and a young woman. I remember something about them being in the mountains and seeing two white monkeys playing in the snow, and how they hadn't had anything to eat or drink when they came across a shepherds flock of sheep. I also remember them crossing a desert. I remember at the end when they are finally found or saved the soldiers gave them peaches to eat. I recall a train ride to a concentration camp as well. And for some reason I think in this book the main character had a pet rooster or cat. These events didn't occur in that order. This book is based on true events.

I know this is frustrating, but I really want to find the book. If anyone can please help me I would really appreciate it!
