This is something of a long-shot, but I was wondering of any "Italy Experts" might be able to shed some light on a little mystery...

Lt Col Llewellyn Douglas Munday Oram is named on a memorial I am researching. He was a pre-war regular soldier, having joined the Royal Artillery in the early 1930s and then transferred to the RAOC in 1939.

I have found numerous references to his pre-war military service (promotions, playing in sports teams etc.) but nothing of his wartime service.

He died 01/12/45 and is shown in the CWGC records as being attached to the 10th (Indian) Division and he is buried in Bari War Cemetery. There is a very short notice in The Times of him having died "on active service", the wording of which is:
"Shot at Taranto on Dec 2 1945, Lt Col LDM Oram RAOC, formerly RA (Ken), loved husband of... etc."

Did anything of note happen in Taranto at that time, some eight months after the end of the war in Europe?
Civil unrest?
Accident?
Suicide?

I've had a bit of a trawl of the 10th (Indian) Div records at the NA (Ordnance-related units), without success. I would have thought a Lt Col would have left a little more trace of his passing!

Any thoughts?

Bob.

Hi

my wifes grandfather served with the 52nd FDS (field dressing station) RAMC.
I believe he served some time at Monte Cassino, but would not talk about it.
I have acquired a few bits of his army paperwork etc on his passing, but cannot seem to find any further information on who 52 FDS where, what field ambulance they belonged to etc...
I would be grateful if anyone has any information/ where to find information etc..

Added 1-9-10

Does not seem to be a lot of movement on this thread
Have had a a look through his paper work and added extra info that may help?

he joined 13/6/40 at crookham
he was part of a field ambulance but the number is obscured. He was A company, looks like TA.
His soldiers service and pay book states he was awarded the africa star - N africa campaign 12/11/42 12/5/43
1st army clasp??? 8/11/44
service overseas embarked 24/10/42 MK?
disembarked 12/11/42 unreadable (begins with B ends in F)on the document but assume N africa
disembarked 9/9/43 Italy
There is a menu from the farewell dinner at Lignano, Italy held on December 4th 1945
attended by a Major IM Brown
O/C of 52 FDS is captain PM McAllen

and if anyone is interested it consisted of

Boeuf or poulet roti
Sauce de pain
Pommes de terre chateau
legumes vertes
jus de roti

Pudding noel
Sauce anglaise

Regards

New to this site, hoping to make contact with others who may have veterans recollections, documents, photos etc, of the 2nd Battalions time during the war period that I may access. This is for a piece of work I am compiling about the Skins, in which my father served, having been posted from the Kings Liverpool April 1940.
I already have accessed the war diaries and information held at the regimental museum together with a fair number of books, but would like to add some 'personel' recollections to my work.
Much obliged to you all out there.
