My lovely wife Charlotte has arranged a trip to Normandy for my 40th next spring. It's the Leger 5 day break that in order is a day in the British and Commonwealth sectors, a day in the U.S sectors and then the 'inland battles' such as Hill 112 and Falaise etc.

Simply question: has anyone been on the trip and if so, what did you think of it?

I was searching for information on aerial attacks on the Firth of Forth Railway Bridge and came across this curious website.
Anti-Glider Poles

I was unaware that these antiglider posts were used in 1940, thought it was more something the Germans came up with later in the war. Perhaps there was concern about a diversionary attack or a raid in 1940. Though important targets would have been miles away from Burntisland, which could of been the bridge, Rosyth Naval Yard etc. Curious.

This view I was after.

For those with After The Battle , 'Blitzkreig In The West' see page 468.

Well anyway , located one end of the valley sucessfully .
Viewed from the left in the above photo.

When I tried to take a Now off the Then, posted above, I thought I'd got the right place. Until I looked again.
I thought it looked 'odd' when I took it.
But convinced myslef I'd got right valley

I got the wrong valley.
If you look at the ATB book on page 468 you'll see another chalk scrape in the middle distance.
That's the one I took & post just above.
Oh well, better luck next time.

Hello folks.
Been meaning to share a couple of photos of a visit I had to the Møvik fortress near Kristiansand, Norway, some time ago.
This battery was erected between 1941 and 1944 by the german navy as one of four coastal defence batteries located at the coast of Kristiansand. The battery was originally called Krooden battery, but was renamed Battery Vara to commemorate a german general who killed during the construction of the battery.
I especially enjoyed visting this battery due to the fact is has a sister battery in Hanstholm, Denmark, which I’ve visited on many occasions. But the battery in Denmark no longer houses the enormous canon as it does in the norwegian one. The germans built both batteries to block off the Skagerrak strait and the sea route to eastern Norway, Kattegat and the Baltic.
The 380 mm Krupp canon is massive. It’s 20 metres long and had a reach of 55 kilometres.
I purchased a german steel helmet there as well, which was found near the area of the battery.

Had a great trip, with good weather, stayed in Sully, which I've been to a few times now, and ended the stay with two nights at the La Fiere Battlefield B&B (more on that later).

Just a few photos to avoid flooding the place (I took 1,100!!)
All going well next year I hope to make it to UK (research and family), Crete, Wolfsberg, Gallipoli, Rome (work) and Hong Kong (market shopping!). Crete is where my grandfather was taken POW before being sent to Wolfsberg, and Gallipoli is where his father (my great grandfather) was in WWI. I plan to visit war graves on my journey to pay my respects, but would appreciate some tips on where to go and what to see as I haven’t done a ‘battlefield’ tour before and will not be using a tour guide.

Anyone been there?

I'm going over to Europe with Andrea (anywhere I want apparently), for upto two weeks, camping in September as long as it's not got anything to do with 1940 or Dunkirk.

I got an old 'After the Battle' book a few weeks ago that has a good article on the race to the Eagles Nest in it. Lots of Then and Nows etc and wondered if it was worth visiting?

The only other option at the moment seems driving down to the lakes in Italy according the 'her who must be obeyed'.

Your thoughts are mucho appreciated on the Eagles Nest.

Just found an old thread-Please feel free to move it to this one:

Cheers
