Need Info on German Civilians

Im doing a paper right now and I based it on my great grandfathers deployment oversea's during the war. He had told me about the multiple times his life was saved by various German familys hiding him or feeding him and providing his unit with food or shelter. I had never realized that a large portion of German citizens in fact realized the motives behind Hitlers actions, and all the casualties of citizens that were purposely caused by german troops. Either way I havent been able to find a single bit of information based on the differences between german soldiers and the "nazi" soldiers. So if anyone could help me out with some info or some links about misconceptions or unpopular facts about the civilians and german soldiers.
My history knowledge if very poor so bear with me.

To get an idea of civilian life in Germany during the war, I'd recommend reading the following two books:

Berlin Diaries by Marie Vassiltchikov

The Past Is Myself (Ride out the Dark in the U.S.) by Christabel Bielenberg.
