Quite an interesting article. I knew Douglas bader was sent there but that's all I've ever really heard about it. A new project to read/learn about I think. Cheers Peter Clare.

Good report on BBC News last night including interview with a German guard who was posted there after losing an eye on the Ost Front.

BBC NEWS | Europe | Colditz seeks to tempt tourists

Watch it here. The music for those that don't know is from the BBC drama from the 70's.

Maybe it needs to be commercialised and pay its way to continue to exist in its present state.

"You were given the choice between war and dishonor.
You chose dishonor and you will have war."

(Winston Churchill made this prophetic pronouncement in a House of Commons speech in 1938, just after Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich agreement with Hitler. Chamberlain returned from Germany with the signed agreement in hand, proclaiming that "peace in our time" had been achieved. Churchill attacked Chamberlain's "politics of appeasement" in this and many other speeches.)

The castle is a very old building with a lot of history, this is just the current chapter .
I don't believe it should be kept as a WW2 theme park but the events from it's time should be remembered but for the place to survive it has to make money.
I've wanted to go there for quite awhile now, one day I will.
(Monte Cassino and Red Squre being the other places I must see.)

I agree, but, likewise, it shouldn't be so remodelled that it loses it's important features. According to the BBC report, this is what the company that is turning the castle into a hotel intends to do. For example, the solitary confinement cells are to become WCs. All health and safety regulations considered, surely the castle can become a hotel whilst retaining its historic importance.
