By autumn 1944, the war was going badly for Adolf Hitler. The Allied troops that had landed at Normandy on D-Day were making their way across Western Europe, liberating Cherbourg in June, Caen in July, Paris in August and Brussels and Antwerp in September. On September 11, the first Allied troops entered Germany.

Hitler was also under attack at home. In July he had survived an assassination attempt mounted by resistance groups within the German army. Several thousand suspects were arrested and about 200 were eventually executed, but it was clear that even the Führer himself was not safe.

Fearing that Hitler would try to flee Germany before the Allies could catch him, the U.S. Office of Strategic Services issued a series of retouched photographs showing what Hitler might look like in disguise. To help the public recognize a potential war criminal, The New York Times ran several of the photos on October 8.
