Campaign Medals

I am about to apply for the camapign medals of my partner's father.

He never claimed them after the war but he is now keen for me to do so on his behalf.

He served with 1st Bn Royal Irish Fusiliers and served in North Africa and Italy from 1943 until the end of the war where he then served in Austria then onto Ireland before being demobbed.

I believe he is entitled to the following campaign medals:

1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, Italy Star and the War Medal 1939-45.

Could anyone verify this as the application form for medals requires the names of the medals applied for and I'd hate to miss a medal out!!

Also, were there differing clasps for some of these medals.

Regards

Stewart

Hi Stewart

Check the date on which the claimant joined his unit in North Africa as it could be that he is entitled to a First Army clasp.
Have a look at this posting I made on the subject on a previous occasion:

(See that you go to the top of the thread)

Hi Stewart,

The NIH supported the RIF on several occasions in Tunisia and Italy, therefore he is entilted to five.

Stewart

At the risk of stating the obvious, has the gentleman got a copy of his Army Records ?

Although this could take much time (we have heard reports of waiting 3 or 4 months at a time) they would provide all the relevant dates on which he joined the RIF in North Africa.

I wrote a small piece about it here:
BBC - WW2 People's War - Getting your Army Records

ps

Best Regards Gerry !
