I'd like to go to Dunkirk

My Dad came back from Dunkirk, and I'd really like to go and see it.

Can anyone suggest the best way to do this, please? - which tour company?

All very easily done.

The BEF campaign of 1940 was very fast moving and covered a lot of ground. If you just want to see the port of Dunkirk then a day trip on the Norfolk Line ferry will probably suffice !

Do you know where your Father served in the campaign ? Numbers of troops were also evacuated from De (La) Panne and that may be worth a look as well.

Whether an organised tour is worthwhile for you will really depend on where your Father travelled. If you can, I would recommend travelling into industrial Northern France up towards the Belgian border (preferably on a rainy day !) just to see where the British troops were billeted during the winter of 1939 - 40 's "Phoney war" (I would hope though that an NCO in the RAMC managed to make himself fairly comfortable )

I've just thought of my old mate Jim West,(from our WFA Branch) he was RAMC.
TA lad from Leeds. He came out at Dunkirk then onto India & Admin Box. ( later 36th Div)
Last time I called him his wife told me he had Alzheimer's.
He didn't even know he she was so no hope of remembering me.
Great old chap.

Thank you for your quick replies. An organised tour would be best for me, travelling with people with similar interests.

Yes, I read that with interest.

I travelled with Leger to Ypres and the Somme recently.

My papers are rather in a muddle at present, but I must have a search for my father's army records.

Joy, just found this old post of yours.

A letter from my Dad dated 29 January 1940 gives his address as no. 4 Company, 17th London General Hospital, no 4 Base Sub Area, B.E.F.
I see it was,

4th Base sub area was at Boulogne.
Would be good if you could get there.

I'd forgotten that. Thank you.

I have recently been to Ypres - where Grandad was in WW1 - and seen the Ploegesteert Memorial - where I saw my great-uncle's name - and now, 20 years on since my Dad died, I have a need to see where Dad was in WW2. I probably won't go to India, but would like to see where he was in France. But I am by myself, and wouldn't want to travel by myself.

That is certainly worth thinking about, thank you very much. I'd like to go to Ypres again. I'd like to go to Poperinge again, too, to see Talbot house - can't go everywhere though!
