So far the only worthwhile thing I've pottered onto regarding wire of the period is on lone sentry again:
Lone Sentry: Barbed-Wire Obstacles, German (WWII U.S. Intelligence Bulletin, September 1943)
there's a lot of stuff on peoples war by people charged with laying the stuff, I was hoping these pleasing eccentrics would have more on wartime usage but their interest seems to be mostly agricultural.:
Antique_Barbed_Wire_society
They do have this in their 'History' page though:
Quote:
1941
First use of barbwire against submarines – Japan sunk carloads in their harbors to hinder submarine passage.
Which is not something I'd ever heard of?

Quite enjoying following the trace of the stuff despite finding not much specific, certainly confirms that near every beach from Australia to Britain was covered in wire during the period.

Cheers,
Adam.

"You were given the choice between war and dishonor.
You chose dishonor and you will have war."

(Winston Churchill made this prophetic pronouncement in a House of Commons speech in 1938, just after Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich agreement with Hitler. Chamberlain returned from Germany with the signed agreement in hand, proclaiming that "peace in our time" had been achieved. Churchill attacked Chamberlain's "politics of appeasement" in this and many other speeches.)

What did the Australians do in ww2 and other conflicts? Check out this site:

this may have delayed the gerrys a little !!!!

it seems that the germans constructed better barbed wire defenses than the uk

Since WW I tanks were extensively used to break down barbed wire. Here's a photo of one so engaged.

The only time 25th TB's Churchills came across barbed wire was in Italy - no problems breaking it to let infantry through.

Despite not beinmg a metallurgist I suspect that the quality of the wire, whichever country made it is much the same.

Cheers, Gerry
