![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | The Sinking of U 534 5 May 1945 U 534, a type IXC/40 submarine, commanded by Kapitanleutnant Herbert Nollau, was attacked and sunk on this day by Liberator VIII /G86 Squadron W/O J D. Nicol and crew, the aircraft was on patrol 0859-1902 hrs. The aircraft reached its patrol area, the Kattegat, at 1313 hrs and within 20 minutes had picked up a radar contact in position 5635/1158, at four and a half miles, while at 1,000 feet. As the Liberator homed in it sighted three fully surfaced U-boats in staggered line astern, dead ahead. A Liberator of 547 Squadron made two attacks on one of them but overshot both attempts, although the second one may have caused some damage. This aircraft was hit by flak and crashed into the sea. This was Liberator E/547 F/L. G W. Hill and crew. Only one survivor was observed and he was picked up by a rescue ship from a nearby lighthouse. Nicol saw the U-boat which had been attacked while diving, and the centre one was already submerged, but the third was still fully surfaced and was attacked with six depth-charges. These overshot and strong flak was met, but was subdued by the front and rear gunners. A second run was made and four depth-charges went down, after which the rear gunner saw the submarine sinking stern first; about 40 survivors, dinghies and wreckage were later photographed. Nothing further was seen of the other two U-boats. Nicol then helped guide the rescue boat to the survivor of the downed Liberator. Of the 52 men aboard the U-boat all but three survived, John Nicol, from Cardiff, received the DFC; he died in 1976. U 534, built in 1942, had made two war cruises, from Bordeaux into the Atlantic in the summer of 1944, and then to Kiel in the autumn. She had left Kiel on 4 May for Norway and went down 13 miles north-east of Anholt Island. 'Search Find And Kill' Franks
