![]() | Very sad. As I pointed out on a thread a couple of years ago, why on earth couldn't the fate of this U-Boat have been sorted out before? In my view it should have been relocated to the Merseyside Maritime Museum. What has happened to the very good small museum of finds that used to be next to the U-534 at the Historic Warships site?

There is absolutely no way U534 could be restored to any sort of perfect condition, she's essentially a wreck. This cutting into 3 and displaying as such may actually be a superb way to give more people an internal view of her, and also, uniquely for the world, give a good insight into a boat's hull construction. At least some motivated people are now attempting to do something with her rather than the last few years stagnation, & they may well end up with an excellent exhibit rather than a continuing white elephant. Cheers, Adam.

![]() | Following up some links on the web it does appear that the museum will open alongside the dissected U-Boat. To be honest it seems to me a lot better than nothing. The U-534 has been decaying for years exposed to the elements as the Warships Trust was refused a lottery grant for a protective housing several years ago. When is it planned to open the new display at Woodside? The U-Boat and the warships Trust was the highlight of my GCSE 'Merseyside and the Battle of the Atlantic' study day that I ran successfully for several years. The day has now been truncated to the Merseyside Maritime Museum, the Western Approaches HQ and the Pierhead Memorials. On our last trip in September the Pierhead memorials were inaccessible as the entire area was a building site. One of the boys wryly commented when we were later looking at pictures of the Liverpool Blitz: 'I see nothing's changed, sir'. I presume that the statue of Johnny Walker and the others are going to be put back? Aren't they? You never know with Liverpool.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | That's exactly how I feel Mark. At least something's being done and it could be a remarkable exhibit that can be viewed by more than guided tours could ever accommodate. Now if they can only get Whimbrel parked alongside & spruced up we might finally have a museum that's a real testament to the Atlantic war. That most unusual of things, a reason for me to visit Liverpool .
