| Lucky Lindy Charles Lindberg (1902-1974) F.D.R. did not like Lindberg and refused to give him a commission in the WW2 Air Force. A general in the Pacific WW2, new Lindberg and asked him to come and help pilots. The pilots would go on a mission and return to their air base with empty gas tanks and Lindberg would come back with half tank of gas. The General had Lindberg teach the pilots how to return with gas in their plane. Lindy went on 50 missions in his P-38, and taught pilots the technique of flying the P-38. The first P-38 planes both engines turned in the same direction. Many cadets were killed because of tonic; the engines had both turning in opposite direction. Lindy shot down one Japanese air plane. Why did the Air Force have 4 engine bombers all engines turning in the same direction? Probable because of inventory. They did not want to search the world for a engine and then find out it was a left instead of a right. Papa Art |
