north africa

i saw a time line map showing the countries the Axis occupied during wwII. and then towards the end how they were re-claimed.

what amazes me is how quickley these countries were occupied. and it wasnt mainly north africa, am i correct in saying the axis occupied mid africa aswell.

did these countries just join the axis or was there resistance.

what did the axis gain other than land as 60 years on there still isnt much there.

thanks

No the Germans never got south of the Sahara desert. The Italians were also in East Africa until summer '41. The area you are talking about "mid Africa" was French North Africa and was under Vichy French control.

I've posted a map of Africa for you. The countries in Red are British controlled, in Green is Vichy French, in Yellow for Italian. All the rest are Free French or neutral Portugese & Spanish. By the summer of 1941 the Italians in East Africa had surrendered, so the Axis were only in Libya. However the Vichy french did fight against Patton & the US troops when they landed in 1942.
