![]() | Abbreviations …
Can anyone pse help with the following abbreviations which are contained in a document at the National Archive? The document concerns an American radio intercept station near Eastbourne. E.T.O.U.S.A. – I assume this means ‘European Theatre of Operations, United States Army (?) C.R.R. – The context is: “The C.R.R. consists only of about a dozen people and works in principle along the lines of the Chicksands one.” Also: “The master serjeant who is in charge of the set room is allowed free access to the C.R.R. but minute to minute control is done through loudspeakers and C.R.R.” T.O. – “The average daily number of messages taken is in the region of 500 non-indicator and 300 TO.” I hope that someone on this site may be able to help. On the other hand, and for future reference, is there a separate site (forum) devoted to Y Service and/or Bletchley Park matters? Thank you … M |

I can't help with the abbreviations unfortunately. Although I did get to visit RAF Chicksands in the late '80's, during a former life. I did get a tour of their famous AN/FLR-9 CDDA "Elephant Cage" and visited the little museum. I am still always interested in this clandestine stuff. What is your connection? Edit: how time flies. It would have been early 80's

Well, "Compilation and Records Room" would appear to be it. When I put the whole term back into Google, up came the following juicy site:- Beaumanor Park Operational Huts Lots of good stuff there, by the look of it. A couple of months back I bought a VG (remaindered) book called, "Voices of the Codebreakers". It has accounts by people who served in all branches ... Y Service, linguists, technicians, SLU, mathematicians, the lot. My background is: Merchant Navy R/O > ham radio > RAF AEO > linguist. But I never worked in Y service or the like. Thanks again ... Yes, you can assume that E.T.O.U.S.A. = European Theatre of Operations, United States Army. But I suppose if if it a US abbreviation then "Theatre" is spelled "Theater."
